Dig Deeper into Sunday’s Gospel: Read Matthew 16:13–20
I found myself falling into a pew before Mass, out of breath with my head spinning. I felt like I had to battle to get there—not only a battle with time, but a war waging deep in my heart. Distracted and overwhelmed, my heart was swirling with anxiety about many things: tension over my crammed schedule, a situation that weighed heavily on my heart, a desire for healing in a broken relationship that hadn’t come, and so much more.
Rushing into Mass with a preoccupied heart, believing I was late, I discovered that I got the Mass time wrong, meaning that, in fact, I was twenty minutes early. Taking this sign from the Lord as an invitation to slow down and take a breath, I opened the Magnificat to that day’s meditation and found the words of British mystic and poet Caryll Houselander. She wrote that in spite of all the unhappiness and disturbances, “you are fighting a winning battle.”
Her words stopped me in my tracks. Everything that was swirling around in my head—all of the battles that were waging in my heart, all of the burdens on my shoulders—were all battles that have already been fought and won.
A Declaration of True Identity
In this weekend’s gospel reading, Jesus proclaims His identity and grants authority of His Church on the solid rock of the truth that nothing will prevail against it. In Matthew 16, we find Jesus taking His disciples to Caesarea Philippi, a territory ruled by Phillip, son of King Herod. This is the same King Herod who tried, and failed, to kill Jesus as an infant.
Jesus asked the defining question of Simon, “Who do you say that I am?” With divinely inspired clarity, Simon responded, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:15–16).
In that moment, Jesus bestows Simon with a new name, a new authority, and an enduring mission. Jesus declared, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18).
Standing Firm on an Unshakeable Rock
Jesus didn’t offer an abstract philosophy, a vague suggestion, or an isolated spiritual path. He established a visible, enduring home—a living Church built on solid rock, designed to withstand every storm. A Church He loved so fiercely that He died for it. Jesus placed the keys in Peter’s hands and entrusted His people—you and me—to the care of His Church. Peter became the first pope of the Church of Jesus Christ, and authority has been passed down, in an unbroken line, for two thousand years.
But even if we know the sure and steady foundation of authority that Jesus Himself established, why do we so often feel overwhelmed with weariness and powerlessness? Because the truth is, we have an enemy who will do anything to convince us we are losing. Just looking at the news for longer than a minute leaves me feeling devastated by the brokenness, like this mess of a world is losing the battle. Wouldn’t the enemy love us to be so distracted by sin and pride that we doubt the truth and goodness of the Church? The goal of the enemy is to shout lies over our hearts so loudly that we forget the still, small voice of our Creator. Make no mistake: we are on the battlefield, and the enemy is waging war against us. But the truth that we stand on—the unshakeable truth—is that the battle has been won.
The Battle is Already Won
Jesus built His Church on a rock so that we can stand on it. He never intended for us to wage the daily battles in our own strength. Exodus 14:14 declares, “The Lord will fight for you; you have only to keep still.” When we allow ourselves to be embraced by the strength and provision of the Church, we can lay down our weapons and trust Him to fight for us.
Friend, what battle is waging in your heart right now?
When you feel like darkness is pressing in, overwhelmed by the demands on your heart and your time, the ache of strained relationships or unanswered prayers, remember that you stand on the rock. We cannot forget that we are fighting a winning battle. We can claim Peter’s confession as our own and declare that Jesus is Lord and darkness will never prevail.
Jesus wins every battle.
Even while we wait in the silence for healing to begin.
Even when we see human brokenness in the Church.
Even when we fall to temptation and sin.
Jesus wins every time.
Walking in Purpose and Authority
That day that I rushed to Mass, out of breath and anxiety swirling, it wasn’t just the peaceful location and inspiring words that calmed my soul; it was the presence of Christ in His Church. It was His grace, encountered in the sacraments that He instituted, that changed my heart.
When we lean into the Church and trust her provision for us on the battlefield, our perspective changes. Instead of relying on our own strength, we turn to Him, and He fills us up with His grace. Then, we are called to share Him. Jesus entrusted Peter with keys—a symbol of authority, trust, and divine stewardship. In our home, workplace, our parish, and community, God has entrusted us with a unique sphere of influence. We are invited to bring His grace, truth, and healing mercy into every room we step into and every relationship He places in our lives.
As we stand on the rock of His Church, we can declare His power over the darkness that will never win.
